Do You Have a Bucket List?
I like to write, especially about financial things and family matters. Most of us have financial issues and most of us have family. So when I write about my favorite topics I know there are lots of people who can relate to my ideas.
I watched “The Bucket List” recently. Two fine actors – Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman – playing terminally ill men who join each other on a wild adventure to experience a wide variety of extraordinary events of their own choosing. With the aid of Nicholson’s money they go sky diving, visiting the pyramids, the Great Wall of China, on an African safari and much, much more.
I’d like to see everyone create a bucket list. A list of relevant, personal experiences they want to have and enjoy before their time is up. Creating that list can bring into focus what is important to you. You will think about what you like to do, who you like to be with, and hopefully start to think about how you might have some of those special “bucket list” experiences.
A Wish with a Timeline
Some of the items on your list will be farther into the future than others. And some will be more expensive than others. But if they are important to you and you are really interested in completing the items on the list, then they become goals, not merely dreams or wishes.
I encourage people to set goals – i.e. a wish with a timeline. Something measurable. Something to work toward and look forward to.
Most people need 3 things – something to do, someone to love and be loved by, and something to hope for. These things make for a fulfilling and purposeful life.
My clients have those three special things, or are at least working at getting them. And that makes me a lucky person. In my professional life I am surrounded by “goal” centered individuals who welcome my guidance in making wise financial decisions to fulfill their bucket list and get what they want out of life.
Occasionally I’ll talk with someone about their goals and find they really don’t spend much time on setting goals. They have much more of a “whatever happens, happens” attitude. And although I think we need to accept life as it happens, I also think we play a major part in shaping our experiences, for good or bad. Shaping your present and your future is what I propose to you as a way of getting the most you can out of your time on this planet. And for many people that will include GIVING the most you can. Isn’t that a worthwhile way to live? Getting the most you can and giving the most you can?
Simple Steps for Setting Goals
I’ll continue to write about important aspects of creating and enjoying the completion of your own personal goals. But let me end with this simple way of integrating goals into your life.
- Pick a topic – family, money, health, love, retirement, travel, etc. anything that is important to you.
- Answer these two questions regarding the topic you selected: What do you want to have happen? What do want to make sure does not happen?
Your goals will come from the things you list in answering those two simple questions. Those items you are willing to act on will shape your future. Get help where you need it – from professionals if appropriate (financial, medical, legal, etc.) and from those who care about you and you care about.
