It’s the end of a year and start of another. Naturally many of us are thinking about making changes in our lifestyle that will create a better “us.” I encourage people to reflect on their life and make changes when they feel it is warranted. Change does not always mean progress, but progress rarely comes without some amount of change.
To contribute to your thought process, if you are so inclined to make a change or two, let me add a few words of encouragement and a bit of advice.
THE RULE OF 3 PREVAILS
Select no more than three topics — for example: weight, money, and time management. That is a lot to take on at one time. Even better, work on those in succession. Keep it simple and you will see progress that can encourage you to continue. Weight occupies the top spot on the list of changes for many of us at this time of the year. The Rule of 3 could mean:
- modify diet
- increase workout regimen
- get a complete physical before starting
Part of making a change is deciding on a REALISTIC expectation within a REALISTIC time frame. I want to lose 5 pounds in 3 months allows behavior modifications to be defined and progress to be measured. Use short time frames. Five pounds in 3 months is less daunting than 20 pounds this year, even if you want to lose 20 pounds ultimately.Losing 20 pounds in a year won’t happen unless you can make changes that enable you to lose close to 5 pounds in 90 days.
More relevant in my world would be increasing your retirement fund by $6,000 per year by opening an IRA. It only happens if you find $100-150 per week to set aside. That will probably require some changes in your lifestyle.
WHO BENEFITS?
I’m all about looking out for number 1 — YOU. So . . . where is the payoff for making a change or two? I’ve never met anyone who has said to me I wish I had eaten more donuts, pizza, bologna sandwiches, and fast food during my life. Or here I am retired and I have saved too much money and I have no idea how to enjoy it. And as we have heard more than once, “I wish I had spent more time at the office” is yet to be seen on a tombstone.
LOOK OUT FOR NUMBER 1! Consider changes that will benefit you and yours. Develop plans, ask for help where you need it. Make 2016 memorable.
